Recently I got a note from Google stating that our Google Places Account had been removed because someone had reported that the listing had incorrect information – our business name. Instead of verifying the business name Google had removed our Google Places listing which has resulted in quite a few missed sales opportunities.

The moral of this story is simple; if you want to screw your competitor flag their Google Places Account. Google apparently does not verify the legitimacy of the account nor does it back up their actions with any logic.

In today’s tough economy, independent business owners often find themselves frustrated when seeking to compete with large corporations for any fair share of the market. Most small business owners simply don’t have the same financial resources or know-how to market their companies alongside the titans of industry. Here i will discuss five smart marketing tips to help keep your companies in the running:

1. SERVE Friends Many online business owners sometimes overlook their strongest marketing tools – their current customers. Small business owners hold a distinct advantage over larger companies because they can to interact with each client at a much deeper level. If you are able to develop strong relationships with your current customers, they will want to return to you for years to come (and bring droves more customers with them).

2. GET ONLINE Don’t overlook the importance of the internet in the current market. Recent research shows that over 92% of adults regularly research products online before buying them in stores*. Professional web development can help even the score with the big guys by giving a clean, professional appearance to your company. Be mindful not to shortchange yourself on your website. It may be better to have no website at all rather than a poorly developed website. A professionally developed site can demand a small investment up front; however the return on investment will be well worth it in the long run.

3. OPTIMIZE AND CONQUOR Using a great looking website is an important step, but it’s not much use to you if no one ever sees it. A strong Search Engine Optimization (SEO DENVER EXPERT) can quickly put your website in front of hundreds or thousands of qualified buyers every month. Investing in a talented Denver SEO Company can lead to astronomical returns for the relatively low monthly expense

4. BRAND THYSELF Just because you are a small business doesn’t mean you can’t resemble the big guys. Personalizing company uniforms, pens, coffee mugs, Frisbees, or other items with your company logo can be surprisingly affordable and can help develop a strong brand image for potential customers. Not only will your company appear more stable, but occasionally giving away quality branded items (say for example mug with your companies’ logo) might be a way to subtly advertise to that particular family on a daily basis.

5. BECOME A SOCIAL BUTTERFLY Independent business owners can’t afford to be shy. Each individual time you come in contact with someone (familiar or new), attempt to make them aware about your enterprise. Certainly don’t be abrasive, but a surprising amount of leads can be developed by simply bringing up your passion in casual conversations. Everyone wants to have an “inside man” – all you need to do is make sure they know what you possibly can offer them.

Many business owners, especially in the Home Improvement and Insurance industries find themselves buying leads that cost more, do less and are distributed to at least 3 of your competitors, this tactic is burning out small business owners and rightfully so.

It’s ok to be picky, most business owners don’t want to share leads with other businesses especially their closest competitors this is why I have compiled a few solutions for you as a small business owner to ditch high pay per lead cost and generate engaging leads with a pop.

Option 1: Major search engines like Google, Yahoo & Bing extend the technology and abilities for you to drive your own leads to your own website just like larger lead generators like ServiceMagic.com and LendingTree.com do. The only downside to this tactic is its time consuming as well as the various tactics involved that allow you to get the best bang for your buck which leads me into option 2.

Option 2: When managing your own Pay-per-click campaign gets tough farm the work out to companies like Yodle and ReachLocal who specialize in not only the best ways to generate the best return on investment for your PPC budget they can also track ROI and automate suggestions and changes to target the best performing keywords for your budget.

Option 3: Sean Hakes, Inc an innovative Denver SEO firm with offices in both Denver and Phoenix offer an affordable solution to small businesses with a limited advertising budget. The Colorado Internet Marketing and Web Design agency will design and develop a semi-custom website that is geared for high conversions. They will inject award winning search engine optimization tactics along with the option to purchase high powered search engine marketing or ppc-management and deliver exhilarating results for a minimal monthly fee.
